Building Utilities Mechanic
Northwest Technical College (NTC) invites applicants to join our team as a Building Utilities Mechanic.
The Building Utilities Mechanic is responsible for the operation of college, building equipment, and boiler operation to provide a safe, clean, and comfortable surrounds for the students, faculty, staff, and the public. The employee must have a well-rounded knowledge of all aspects of buildings and grounds maintenance. The employee must also perform semi-skilled jobs in various trade areas and work without immediate supervision, providing leadership in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and related equipment. The employee must complete and record monthly safety inspections of all major building systems and perform preventive maintenance as required. Employee must hold a Forklift Safety Certificate and a First Class “C” Boiler’s License. The employee in this position must possess the ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments to machinery, equipment and building maintenance as well as some daily cleaning services for Northwest Technical College.
Responsibilities of the Building Utilities Mechanic include:
- Performing semi-skilled trades work sufficient to complete minor repairs and adjustments to plumbing, pneumatic controls, electrical and/or HVAC system and equipment. Making simple repairs and assisting in making complex repairs. Duties include but not limited to maintenance and minor repair work on heating/power equipment, boilers, pumps, compressors, heaters, changing air filters, motors, drinking fountains, toilets bowls, sink bowls, faucets and light fixtures. Possessing a boilers first class engineer grade C license and being in charge of maintenance/operation of the High-Pressure Hot Water boiler system. Performing simple repairs or maintenance task independently. Informing the Facilities Director of any major repairs. Calling, scheduling and assisting contractors on service calls or any major repairs. Percentage of time: 40%
- Performing exterior general maintenance which includes but not limited to the routine grounds work to enhance the appearance of landscaping by planting, cutting, mowing, raking, seeding/sodding, hedging, trimming and watering. Operating machinery and vehicles in a safe manner and doing daily safety checks, fluid checks and greasing before use. Making sure the grounds are kept neat, clean, safe and in an aesthetically pleasing manner daily. Snow/ice removal from sidewalks and entrances which should be hazard free. Percentage of time: 30%
- Performing general maintenance and cleaning to include, but not limited to, classrooms, labs, hallways/corridors, lobbies, entrances, lounges, restrooms, offices, supply rooms, storage rooms, public areas, mechanical rooms and other work areas at Northwest Technical College. Performing detailed cleaning and maintenance on campus. Other duties include, vacuuming, dusting, scrubbing, cleaning rugs and upholstery, mopping, sweeping, stripping and waxing floors, changing light bulbs, emptying trash and recycle containers, maintain supplies of soap and paper products, washing walls and polishing other surfaces (woodwork, tables, countertops, fixtures, etc.), washing windows, and monthly checks on fire extinguishers, defibrillators, fire blankets, first aid kits, safety supplies, emergency lights fixtures and eyewash/shower stations. Percentage of time: 15%
- Monitoring building integrity and conditions and performing general maintenance duties as necessary. Coordinating with internal faculty and staff to interpret their requests for service or building issues. Informing Facilities Building and Maintenance Supervisor of maintenance, equipment and supply needs. Percentage of time: 5%
- Maintaining proper labeling, dilution and understanding use of all chemicals and cleaning products. Wearing personal protective equipment as necessary. Adhering to safety regulations so that the College is in compliance with federal, state and local regulations and codes. Applying knowledge of applicable safety precautions and procedures. Securing work area as required. Percentage of time: 5%
- Performing functions related to the operations of the department and the safety/security of the Northwest Technical College Campus. Duties include, but are not limited to, all doors, windows and state vehicles are secured, no one is left in the building, complies with rules and regulations related to emergencies, rooms are set up per request in a timely manner, showing up to work on time and assisting with shipping/receiving of materials. Helping coordinate and performing all NTC physical plant and campus needs for special events, emergencies, moving and all other facilities & grounds activities. Percentage of time: 5%
- Current license as a Boiler First Class Engineer Grade C.
- Knowledge and skills in the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in trades work sufficient to assist skilled trades staff in the completion of assigned projects.
- Ability to perform semi-skilled trades work sufficient to complete minor trades plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and/or electrical systems and equipment.
- Ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments to machinery and equipment including the general maintenance and minor repairs of buildings.
- Experience keeping simple records, performing assigned tasks with limited direction, and following oral/written instructions in a safe and efficient manner.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety measures related to trades work sufficient to safely and efficiently perform the job duties.
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Class D driver’s.
- High school Diploma or GED.
- Two Years of related experience.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain trucks, tractors, and other ground and road maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of the procedures and practices of building HVAC systems, system installation methods, operation procedures, HVAC system controls strategies, and the materials and equipment utilized in the process.
- Knowledge of different types of flooring/floor covering sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance and appropriate cleaning methods, materials, agents and equipment.
- Knowledge of chemical cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleaches, scouring agents and soaps sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s) handle and apply, and dispose of safely or the ability to learn about them.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, work alone or in a team environment and provide work direction to unskilled helpers.
- Ability to use business software such as email, word processing, internet to access document data and training.
- Coursework in steam engineering maintenance or repairs (e.g., plumbing, electricity, steam engineering, boiler operations, air conditioning, refrigeration and steam fittings).
