Assistant / Associate Professor of Music / Music Education
Bemidji State University (BSU) invites qualified applicants to join our team as Assistant or Associate Professor of Music / Music Education. We seek someone to teach our undergraduate music education sequence, supervise student teachers, teach other core curricular courses on the basis of the needs of the program, serve as our assessment coordinator, possibly teach an applied area, and coordinate and teach courses in our summer Master of Music Education (MME) program. Additional duties will include committee assignments and performing other services to the university and community.
Celebrating over 80 years on the shores of Lake Bemidji, the School of Music at BSU prepares students to become independent and creative musicians within a liberal arts setting. The School of Music offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Music Education (vocal and instrumental), Bachelor of Arts degrees in General Music, and Bachelor of Music degrees in Vocal Performance, Instrumental Performance, Piano Performance and Pedagogy, Master of Music Education, and an Arts Management Certificate.
Ensembles are open to students of all majors and provide engaging performance opportunities including regional and international tours, the annual JazzFest, guest clinician workshops and master classes, woodwind and piano festivals, and a fully staged opera production.
BSU is one of only four schools in Minnesota, and a limited number worldwide to bear the distinction of being an All-Steinway School. BSU currently owns more than 50 Steinway and Boston (a Steinway subsidiary) pianos.
Formerly the Department of Music, the School of Music, is now one of nine schools following the recent university reorganization. The program currently has 8 full-time and 14 adjunct faculty members. Serving more than 65 music majors and minors as well as non-music majors and community members, the program has a rich and vibrant history.
Bemidji State University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
Responsibilities of the Assistant or Associate Professor of Music / Music Education include:
- Teaching the undergraduate music education sequence, supervising student teachers and students completing practicum and clinical teaching placements in K-12 settings.
- Serving as the director of the summer MME program. This includes working to ensure a sufficient enrollment to sustain the program.
- Working with licensure and accreditation in conjunction with the School of Professional Education.
- Serving as the School’s assessment coordinator and advisor of the student NAfME Chapter.
- Teaching other classes in applied areas as it complements the needs of the School of Music.
- Contributing to a program of scholarship within the discipline, advising students, serving the University and community, and other associated faculty duties.
- Assisting the School of Music in recruiting and festivals.
- Contributing to a collegial and supportive environment that advances the goals of the program, including curriculum development, assessment, and other governance activities.
- Contributing to interdisciplinary teaching and involvement in activities that support BSU’s Shared Fundamental Values.
- Facilitate programmatic assessment and music ed accreditation with various entities.
- Doctorate in Music (ABD considered), including at least one graduate degree in Music Education.
- Three years of prior K-12 teaching experience, including at least one year in K-12 music education.
- Collegiate teaching experience, which can be graduate teaching assistantship work.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Completed doctorate (PhD or equivalent) in Music Education.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the K-12 and collegiate levels. This may be evidenced by publications in journals; presentations; performances; awards and/or recognition from local, regional, national organizations; elected leadership positions; and growth/retention of student involvement in choirs, vetted/invited performances, or other pertinent achievements.
- Knowledge of current trends in public education.
- Experience in general and elementary music classrooms.
- Familiarity with Orff and Kodály pedagogies.
- Contributions to the field of music education through scholarly publications or presentations.
- Experience supervising student teachers.
- Experience with online teaching.
- Demonstrated recruiting success.
- A commitment to and experience working effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, including first-generation college students.
- Interest in interdisciplinary contributions.
- The ability to teach core curriculum courses and core music courses as needed by the School.
