Mn State Academic Professional I - Student Support Specialist

Northwest Technical College (NTC) invites applicants to join our team as a Student Success Specialist.  The Student Success Specialist at Northwest Technical College plays a crucial role in supporting students throughout their academic journey. Reporting to the Director of Enrollment and Student Success, this position provides personalized guidance, resources, and academic coaching to both individual students and groups.
                 
Responsibilities of the Student Success Specialist include: 

  • Student Support Services. (40%)
    • Responding to student inquiries and providing a variety of resources to assist students.
    • Monitoring students’ academic progress, analyzing progress reports, identifying needs or problem areas, and referring students to appropriate campus resources for assistance.
    • Applying the principles, practices, and techniques needed to assist with and encourage student success, engagement, and retention.
    • Streamlining and sharing essential onboarding information while implementing programming and outreach activities for new and continuing students.
    • Adopting and utilizing a Case Management model to optimize interactions and provide academic support.
    • Assisting with and coordinating functions of the Early Alert Management System, including providing workshops and training for faculty and students in the platform, and providing timely support for at-risk students.
    • Coordinating and assisting in the creation of a multi-modal workshops series on student success topics including, but not limited to time management, academic distress, and academic regulations and deadlines.
    • Collecting and analyzing student programming and services, and producing reports related to student success.
    • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with faculty, staff, internal and external organizations, team members, and most importantly, students.
    • Assisting in facilitating peer tutoring.                 
  • Academic Advising and Coaching. (30%)
    • Advising enrolled students regarding academic and vocational programs, degree requirements, and academic success plans.
    • Partnering with students in developing comprehensive and meaningful educational plans and clarifying educational and career goals.
    • Monitoring advisee engagement, attendance, academic progress, academic referral and action, and support program requirements.
    • Collaborating with the American Indian Resource Center, faculty advisors, program chairs, and other stakeholders regarding academic advising and early intervention for at-risk students.
    • Guiding students in courses registration aligned with their majors, interests, values, and abilities.
    • Interpreting and explaining college policies and procedures to new and continuing students.
    • Effectively navigating and resolving sensitive situations by demonstrating empathy and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Testing Career Services. (20%)
    • Assisting the Testing Center by proctoring entrance assessments and licensing exams.
    • Communicating with instructors and students to maintain an updated schedule for the Testing Center.
    • Ensuring a secure testing center environment that promotes fairness and inclusion by understanding institutional, program, and faculty expectations.
    • Serving as a certified Pearson Virtual University Enterprises (VUE) test administrator.
  • Student Life and Activities. (10%)
    • Assisting in maintaining social media accounts for student support and outreach, including occasional digital media content creation.
    • Participating in student activities such as: Student Senate, student clubs, student recognition, retention, satisfaction strategies, and graduation ceremonies.
    • Connecting students to other campus student support services, assisting students to find services for which they are eligible, and linking students to appropriate campus and community services and resources.
Minimum qualifications for this position include:
  • Associate’s degree or two years of work experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of software such as Microsoft Office.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.   
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Bachelor's degree or four years of work experience.
  • Experience working in an academic setting.
  • Experience providing academic guidance and support to students.
  • Experience with Zoom or a similar web-based video conferencing tool.
  • Pearson VUE certified proctor.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
