Assistant / Associate Professor of Criminal Justice - Police Science

 Bemidji State University (BSU) invites qualified applicants to join our team as an Assistant/Associate Professor of Criminal Justice-Police Science. BSU’s Criminal Justice Department offers a BS program, as well as a minor in Criminal Justice and a Peace Officer Certificate Program.  All of our classes are led by dedicated, experienced faculty who are committed to helping every student develop the knowledge, values, ethics, and standards of practice in and out of the classroom needed to become a successful leader and professional effectively serving our communities. Our rigorous program, combined with BSU’s core education framework, teaches students to think critically across disciplines.
 
Responsibilities of the Part-Time Assistant/Associate Professor of Criminal Justice-Police Science include:  

  • Delivering assigned courses on campus in person as the standard instructional mode.
  • Teaching a wide variety of undergraduate criminal justice classes on BSU’s Campus. Courses may include, but are not limited to, Research Methods and Statistics for Criminal Justice, Introduction to Emergency Management, Criminal Justice Diversity and Ethics, Criminology and Delinquency, Police Process, Policing on Tribal Lands, and Police and Community Relations. Other courses may also be required by the department to deliver the program to its students.
  • Designing and delivering courses with D2L Brightspace course management software to students. 
  • Displaying a strong commitment to quality teaching and collegial relationship building.
  • Ensuring that all courses are designed and taught using best practices for accessibility, clarity of learning objectives, student engagement, and alignment of assessments with course outcomes.
  • Participating in course design reviews, training, and professional development activities to support instructional quality and enhance the student learning experience.
  • Working with other faculty members and students in curriculum development, student advising, and student placement.  
  • Contributing to interdisciplinary teaching and involvement in activities that support BSU’s Shared Fundamental Values
Minimum qualifications for this position include:
  • Master’s degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a licensed Peace Officer in the State of Minnesota.
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Earned terminal degree, or an earned terminal degree ABD, from a regionally accredited university in Criminal Justice or closely related field as of the starting date for the position is strongly preferred. Completion of a terminal degree is required for promotion and tenure consideration. A Juris Doctor is considered a sufficient terminal degree for this position. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with and/or interest working with students and colleagues from multi-cultural and diverse backgrounds and using culturally responsive pedagogy and practice.
  • Demonstrated effective teaching at the college level.
  • Experience delivering college courses using Desire to Learn (D2L) software.
  • Experience developing courses at the college level.
  • Demonstrated history of community involvement.
  • Demonstrated commitment to higher education.
  • Ten (10) years of experience as a licensed Peace Officer in the State of Minnesota with experience as a supervisor, detective, or investigator.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
