First Lutheran Church -First Lutheran’s September and October art exhibit will feature photography by Joyce Kleven and woodcarvings by Dr. Jim Ghostly. Joyce is a retired math teacher and has loved taking pictures since the day her father gave her a camera. Nature photography—especially birds—has become her particular passion. Her exhibit is called “Noticing Nature". It is Joyce’s goal to get unique pictures and to capture nature as she sees the images. The thrill of getting that special shot is well worth the hours spent waiting and watching. She says, “Still photography—especially closeups—allows us to really see or notice things in nature that we may otherwise miss, like the smile of a dragonfly or the reflections on a soap bubble.”
Dr. Jim Ghostly, who passed away in May, was an active member of First Lutheran Church and the Bemidji community. Jim was a gifted wood carver. He enjoyed participating in wood carving groups in Bemidji and Blackduck. He loved sketching, and in particular, teaching his grandchildren how to draw many things. His beautiful artwork is widely distributed among family and friends, and those creations will always serve to remind us of his lovely spirit.
There will be an open house on September 5 from 2:30 to 4:30 PM at First Lutheran Church, 900 Bemidji Ave. N. Refreshments will be served.
Butch Holden Studio – A Garden Party Gallery Walk Reception & Open Studio will be held on September 6th and 7th at Butch Holden Studio from 10am to 4 pm, with a Friday evening reception and live music by Lou Sampsa from 4pm to 7 pm. Gallery North Stop in for Gallery North’s First Friday open house and reception from 2 to 6 pm on September 6 for Showcase Artist Charles Alberti. Charles Alberti's current collection of paintings titled "Thematic Painting to Music" focus on listening to a piece of music and then painting images and colors that come to mind. Sometimes he continues to play the same piece of music over and over as he paints. Other times he can listen once and the imagery stays with him as he paints. He generally paints 6 to 12 hours most days. All of the paintings use acrylics paints on canvas. Some are framed while others are on gallery canvas. In addition to the actual paintings, attendees will be able to pre-order and purchase large posters of any of the paintings in the exhibit. The artist will give a brief presentation at 4:00 P.M. Gallery North is a non-profit cooperative art gallery that has been displaying and selling original art and fine crafts by area artists since 1989.
