Carpenter

Bemidji State University (BSU) invites qualified applicants to join our team as the Carpenter.
 
The Carpenter performs skilled rough and finished carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, wooden structures furniture, and fixtures at Bemidji State University.  

Responsibilities of the Carpenter include:

  • Performing skilled carpentry tasks on buildings, cabinetry and finishing carpentry projects in a skilled, workmanship-like manner while providing for maximum usage of areas for students and faculty. Performing repairs and building maintenance on building components so that all areas continue to be useable and in good repair. Building, fitting and fastening door frames and trim. Preparing and hanging doors. Repairing walls, desks, windows and all other repairs when and where necessary. Being able to understand blueprints, sketches, and drawings for the construction and maintenance at Bemidji State University. Carpentry projects are prioritized and completed according to specifications in a timely manner. Percent of Time:  30%
  • Remodeling large areas within University buildings to accommodate the needs of the departments. Removing and building walls, cabinet’s countertops, tables, bookcases, and shelving. Performing painting and finishing of buildings, walls, ceilings and woodwork. Patching holes/blemishes and sanding surfaces properly. Wall finishes are completed in a timely manner. Installing laminate, fiberglass boards, and other manufactures’ finishes. Percent of Time:  30%         
  • Erecting and working from scaffolding and ladders to keep buildings and equipment in good repair. Working with concrete, tile grouting, and masonry repair so that related areas are kept in good condition. Percent of Time:  15%            
  • Performing building and grounds work as assigned. Being able to remove snow, mow grass, operate equipment, assisting with mechanical repairs. Making sure all tasks are completed in a professional and safe manner. Percent of Time:  15%            
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor which includes but are not limited to: moving items as requested around campus, delivering items, and helping with special event setup’s. Percent of Time:10%            
Minimum qualifications for this position include:
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in carpentry OR three and one-half years of experience as a carpenter, OR Two-year vocational/technical program in carpentry, plus two years of experience as a carpenter, OR one year of vocational/technical program in carpentry, plus three years of experience as a carpenter. If you have completed an apprenticeship, you must provide the date of completion.
  • All experience must include rough and finish carpentry to qualify. Carpentry skills will be assessed against the standards listed below.
  • Ability to read and understand construction, remodeling and repair project plans, blueprints, and specifications sufficient to draft, interpret, modify, and follow to complete new construction, remodeling, and other carpentry projects; by following standard construction practices of the carpentry trade.
  • Ability to build, repair, and install cabinets, Formica, floors, windows and door frames, ceilings, interior trim, steel stud framing, furniture, fixtures, etc. sufficient to complete skilled finish and rough carpentry projects in the construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings and wood structures.
  • Ability to operate hand and power carpentry tools and equipment sufficient to build, remodel and repair buildings, wood structures, furniture, etc. and to ensure their safe and efficient operation to prevent injury, by inspecting the equipment daily and replacing worn parts; by sharpening blades and edges of hand and power tools; and by repairing or arranging for the repair of damaged or broken equipment.
  • Skills in record keeping sufficient to collect and report data and document and maintain an inventory of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of shop math sufficient to estimate labor and material cost for planned projects, ability to requisition and select the necessary equipment and materials for completing construction projects.
  • Organizational skills sufficient to plan and coordinate work activities and to prioritize, schedule and report on the progress of carpentry projects.
  • Oral communication skills sufficient to instruct and monitor the carpentry work of lesser-skilled employees, and to train and direct them during the project, instructing on the appropriate use of equipment/tool use and carpentry techniques, by inspecting the quality of work performed by others, by providing constructive feedback on work performance, and by recording hours worked, materials and equipment used.  
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Completion of a vocational/technical program in carpentry.
  • Five years experience working in commercial construction or institutional setting.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
